What to bring:
- Photographic Prints, Slides, Negatives, Transparent Media, Maps, Etc.
- Scan bed is 12.2” x 17.2” for printed (not transparent) media
- Flash Drive or External Hard Drive
What is provided:
- Frames for scanning slides, negatives, and other transparent media
- EPSON Scan software for scanning/editing
- Photoshop, GNU Image Manipulation Program, Vivid-Pix Restore software for editing
Notes on Resolution for Slide Scanning:
- The higher the resolution, the longer the scanner will take.
- Physical slide size: approx. 1.375” x 0.875”
- Scanned at 2400 dpi:
- Printed at 300 dpi: 11” x 7”
- Printed at 100 dpi: 33” x 21”
- Scanned at 3200 dpi:
- Printed at 300 dpi: 14.67” x 9.33”
- Printed at 100 dpi: 44” x 28”
Instructions for Slide Scanning:
- Place Transparent Media Bar at top of scanner bed.
- Load 15 slides in the tray holder:
- Arrow point should be at top left, clips facing up
- Reverse slides so correct viewing direction is facing down
- Rotate slides 90° counterclockwise (top of picture on left)
- Hold tray up to light to verify correct orientation
- Login using your library card number and last name as password.
- Insert your flash drive into a front USB port.
- Double-click the “Epson Scan” icon:
- Select Mode: Professional Mode
- Select Document Type: Film
- Select Film Type: Positive Film
- Select Resolution: 1200 or 2400 dpi
- Carefully position the slide tray with arrows aligned at top left.
- Click “Preview” to view thumbnails:
- Verify rotation and orientation
- Use “Backlight Correction” if needed
- Try “Color Restoration” for aged, reddish slides
- Click “Scan”:
- Select Destination: navigate to your flash drive
- Choose a starting filename number
- Click “OK” to begin scanning
- Scanning 15 slides at 2400 dpi takes ~20 minutes
- To scan additional trays:
- Load next tray while scanning completes
- Close File Explorer window after each scan
- Preview, verify, and scan again as needed
- Partial trays will scan only the present slides
- To end your session:
- Exit Epson Scan and close windows
- Use “Safe to Remove Hardware” before ejecting your flash drive
- Remove slide frame and collect all items
- Click “Exit” on the taskbar to reboot and clear files
- Click “Yes” to confirm
