MCDL has been named the 2025 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant recipient. The grant provides support for us to expand our current graphic novel services and programs. Last year, MCDL patrons borrowed graphic novels more than 92,000 times. The format is so popular we have manga events for youth and young adults which introduce patrons to new titles and provide light instruction in illustration, plus we host an annual Mini Con. The grant’s objective is to facilitate library-generated services that will promote graphic novels. We are happy for the support to increase the collection size which will also help us highlight the importance of graphic literature, sequential art, and comics as a literary medium. The grant includes a collection of 80 Will Eisner books and other award-winning titles, $2,000 to purchase other graphic titles, and an additional $1,000 for a new community program. Watch for details later this year! Will Eisner (1917-2005) was an acclaimed American comics writer, artist, teacher, and entrepreneur. He is considered one of the most important contributors to the development of sequential art (a term he coined) and is known for his influential comic series, The Spirit; for his use of comics as an instructional medium; for his leading role in establishing the graphic novel as a form of literature with his 1978 groundbreaking graphic novel, A Contract with God and Other Tenement Stories; and for his 20 years of teaching at the School of Visual Arts. In a career that spanned seven decades—from the dawn of the comic book to the advent of digital comics—Will Eisner was truly the “Father of the Graphic Novel.” Table of Contents Summer Reads 3 Upcoming Books 4 MCDL News & Notes 6 Kids & Family Events 9 Tween Events 13 Teen Events 14 Adult Events 16 Friends of MCDL 23 Medina 330-725-0588 210 S.
