Executive Director’s Notes In 2024, MCDL was on a roll. Sometimes literally. The Book Bike debuted in May at the Lodi Memorial Day Parade and had a full schedule at community events. It has an attached trailer, custom built by MCDL Maintenance Department staff, with enclosed shelves for books and all the technology we need. As school let out, we were excited to begin offering Adventure Passes to the Akron Zoo, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Akron Art Museum, and Brunswick Recreation Center. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, these admission passes can be borrowed for up to a week. This fall, along with our CLEVNET partner libraries, we launched a new online catalog and app. The fresh interface allows you to search the physical and eMedia collection simultaneously, place and manage holds, view checkouts and due dates, edit account information, and more . We debuted a redesigned MCDL website in December that complements our new events and meeting room reservation software. The website utilizes the most current accessibility technology to ensure every community member can navigate it easily. Whether you’re booking a community room, browsing books, or registering for an event, I hope you find the new design user-friendly. I extend my thanks to MCDL staff, patrons, volunteers, Friends of the Library, Board of Trustees, and community partners for a productive year. I’m looking forward to working together in 2025 to advance the library’s mission to enrich life in the community with outstanding and innovative library services for all. 8 MCDL News & Notes Welcome to the Board of Trustees Christopher Jakab moved to Medina County more than forty years ago. He is a graduate of Miami University and earned a master’s degree from Cleveland State. He enjoys traveling, disc golf, and outdoor activities that help wear out his two big dogs. He worked for the Medina County Board of Commissioners for more than thirty years as County Finance Director and County Administrator, now serving in a part time role as he eases into retirement. Jakab is committed to volunteer service and assisting residents of Medina County. His former board service includes Project: LEARN and the Recovery Center. Strategic Plan: Overview of Second Year Strategic Goal 1: Engage the Community • As a Dementia Inclusive Library, we are working with community partners to become part of the Ohio Council for Cognitive Health’s Dementia Friendly Community Network. A dementia-friendly community is a one that is informed, safe, and respectful of individuals with the disease, their families and caregivers, and provides supportive options that foster quality of life. Staff training and dementia-friendly resources and programs are ongoing. • Library staff and personnel from the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities reviewed all public and staff spaces and submitted suggestions for accessibility improvements. • Doubled the distribution of Kindergarten and Caregiver Kits from 2023, including distribution through partner agencies. • The Book Bike rolled out at multiple community events around the county. • Business community feedback survey conducted. Strategic Goal 2: Nurture Innovation & Adaptability • A staff suggestion box was implemented and reviewed regularly, complementing the Great Ideas from the Staff program. Strategic Goal 3: Communication Strategies • New Library Live newsletter saw increased open rates in digital format as robust demand for paper copies continues. • Accessibility services and resources, including Mamava Pod (pictured), were promoted on the website and social media regularly. • New website design and online events calendar launched. Strategic Goal 4: Foster an Exceptional Work Environment • Strategic workforce analysis and compensation study was conducted and will be presented to the Board of Trustees in first-quarter 2025. • Alumni feedback regarding Leadership U, the in-house leadership and mentorship program, was gathered in anticipation of a program redesign in 2025. • ADP Learning Management Module was implemented, allowing for customized training options and tracking. Mamava Pod at Medina Library provides a private space for pumping or breastfeeding “I believe reading and literacy are important factors in creating and maintaining a thriving community environment.” – Christopher
9 MCDL News & Notes Spring StoryWalk® StoryWalk® is a partnership between MCDL and: • Medina County Park District, Carolyn Ludwig Mugrage Park, 4985 Windfall Rd., Medina • Medina City Schools, Northrop Elementary, 950 E. Reagan Pkwy., Medina It promotes literacy, physical activity, and spending time together as a family. Each season brings a new story. Watch for Some Bugs by Angela DiTerlizzi on March 1. Makerspace & Digital Lab The Makerspace is just that – a free space to make things. This bright, engaging area, located in the Family History and Learning Center at Medina Library, features sewing and embroidery machines, a laser engraver, 3D printer, large format printer, button maker, Cricut, T-shirt press, sublimation printer, and more. In 2024, the Makerspace served nearly 10,000 patrons and printed 6,700 feet of banner and sticker material on the large format printer. They recently added a new 3D printer and Cricut machine to replace the prior ones that were very well used. The Makerspace is ideal for small business and non-profit promotional needs. “The Makerspace is a gem in our community. The staff is very easy to work with and knowledgeable. We have watched the Makerspace evolve and grow, continually adding services based on user feedback.” – Amy Busby, Medina City Schools Director of Communications Adjacent to the Makerspace is the Digital Lab, featuring equipment for conversion of reels, videos, and slides into digital files. Film degrades with age so the longer one waits the worse condition their memories may be in. The lab also has a turntable and cassette conversion equipment. Appointments are required so staff can offer assistance, if needed. Equipment can be reserved for up to three hours. Learn more and schedule an appointment at mcdl.info/Makerspace. Cover photo: Makerspace Associate Miranda Fein (standing) helps Sara Tran, MCDL’s Purchasing Coordinator, use the embroidery machine. Snuggle Up & Read MCDL patrons and staff donated enough pajamas and books this December, during our Snuggle Up and Read campaign, to create 54 book and PJ combos for Medina County kids in need. Recipient agencies include Birthcare of Medina County and Catholic Charities. Both agencies accept walk-in clients seeking assistance. Birthcare helps with young children and their families while Catholic Charities offers a small food pantry and other life needs, as available. Thank you to our donors and library volunteers who package the Snuggle Up sets. “Bedtime is a great time to read together. It’s calming and creates bonds between child and caregiver. The greatest benefit of all is the early literacy skills kids learn from hearing the reader’s voice, looking at pictures and touching books. It prepares them for school and life.” – Morgan Fryar, Medina Children’s Department Librarian
