September, October, November 2025 Library Live News and events at Medina County District Library • mcdl.info LISA UNGER New York Times and internationally bestselling author of twenty-two novels, Lisa Unger is regarded as a master of suspense. Details on page 17.
Medina history aficionados know the Franklin Sylvester Library opened at our Medina Library location in September 1907. But library service didn’t begin with Mr. Sylvester. The Medina Circulating Library Society formed in 1877 and became The Medina Library Association in 1899. During this era, various stores around Public Square housed the library collection. Other benchmarks in MCDL history include our Bookmobile debut at the 1948 County Fair, Brunswick, Lodi, Seville, and Hinckley Libraries opening in the early to mid 1960s, and Buckeye Library opening in 2005. I am inspired to reflect on our history as we are in the midst of a digitization project that includes scanning old library board minutes and preserving our founding documents and constitution. I wonder what challenges library founders faced with launching a library at the turn of the last century and during the turbulent ‘60s? It sheds perspective on the choices and challenges we face today. The current state funding cuts to Ohio public libraries will impact us all. The federal request to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services will have a devastating impact on the State Library of Ohio and jeopardize the Talking Book Program that serves over 9,000 blind and print disabled veterans, the Ohio Web Library, and the Ohio Digital Network, which makes the Ohio Memory Project accessible, among other initiatives. As we respond to these modern challenges, I remain inspired by the ingenuity and tenacity of our community and library throughout history. I don’t know what MCDL 2050 will look like, but I know our staff, trustees, and volunteers will keep working together to serve our patrons. For now, I’m taking it one day – and one book – at a time. 4 MCDL News & Notes MCDL Accepts Eisner Grant Chris Weaver-Pieh, Collection Resources Director, accepted the 2025 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant on behalf of MCDL at this year’s American Library Association Annual Conference in Philadelphia. The grant aims to expand library programs and services that promote graphic novels to patrons. The award included $2,000 to purchase additional graphic novels for the collection, $1,000 for programming, a selection of Will Eisner’s work, and a selection of the winning titles from this year’s Will Eisner Awards at Comic-Con International.
