2 MCDL News & Notes Kathy Petras (L) retired with 34½ years of service and is respected for her expertise in local and family history and genealogy research. Kathy worked in the Reference Department for many years, and moved to the Family History and Learning Center in 2019. She’s known for her ability to decipher handwriting from Civil War letters and her love of a good family history mystery. Staff collected donations for the Medina County Historical Society in Kathy’s honor. Seventy Years of Service Retires from Medina Library This summer two of Medina Library’s longest serving staff members, Kathy Petras and Dianna Wertz, retired Welcome to the Board of Trustees Caleb Parker joined the MCDL Board of Trustees in June, filling an unexpired term. Parker is an associate attorney with Williams and Batchelder, LLP in Medina. He has a B.A. in political science from Gettysburg College and received his Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. He was sworn in as an attorney in the State of Ohio in November 2021. Caleb grew up in Medina and graduated from Medina High School. He is excited to join the Board of Trustees to be a voice in developing MCDL as a public institution able to serve the next generations. He lives in Medina with his fiancé, Kyle. Staff Leadership Sue Schuld, MCDL Technology Manager, was appointed to a three-year term on the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN) beginning July 1. OPLIN is a state agency of Ohio that provides internet access to the 251 Ohio public libraries. Congratulations to Dan Holahan, Medina Library Reference Supervisor, and Jenna Elswick, MCDL Human Resources Manager, for being named to Leadership Medina County’s 2023 LEAD Institute and Signature Class, respectively. We look forward to your contributions as leaders in the community! “I will miss my coworkers and the patrons the most. One of my favorite memories was when I found my fifth cousin once removed by conducting genealogy research for someone else!” – Kathy “My favorite part of working here has been seeing the generations come through our doors. You know you’ve made an impact on your community when people want to stand in line to visit with you and introduce you to their families,” – Dianna Dianna Wertz (R) had 35 years of service in the Customer Service Department and is well-known for her “smiling, friendly personality that makes everyone feel special,” says her manager, Christine Gramm. Dianna was the very first staff member to execute a passport at Medina Library. She is generous with her time and skill, helping whenever and wherever she is needed.
