What to bring:

  • Photographic Prints, Postcards, Documents
    • Best for standard-sized photos (up to 8” x 10”) created after 1950s
    • Not suitable for fragile, delicate items
    • No transparent media (slides, negatives)
    • No thick media that can’t be run through a document feeder
  • Flash Drive

What is provided:

Instructions

  1. Launch software.
  2. Select scanner.
  3. Select a location to save your photos.
  4. Name your photos.
  5. Select your photo enhancement settings.
  6. Select your resolution and file type.
  7. Describe and scan your photos.
  8. Scan completed.
  9. Editing.

Getting Started

  • Ask a staff member if you need help at any time.
  • Login with your library card number and last name.
  • Insert your flash drive into the USB port.
  • Ensure the Epson FastFoto scanner is turned on (blue power light should not be flashing).

Loading Photos

  • Count your photos in advance for verification.
  • Inspect for tape, staples, or anything that could cause a jam.
  • Do not mix photo sizes in one scan batch.
  • Photo loading: Face up, top edge first
  • Document loading: Face down, top edge first
  • Adjust the document guides to match the size of the items.

Software Settings & Scanning

  1. Launch Epson FastFoto by double-clicking its desktop icon.
  2. Select "Epson FF-680W" and click OK.
  3. Click the folder icon to choose a save location, browse to your flash drive or folder, and click OK.
  4. Name your photos with a meaningful prefix (e.g., Vacation, FamilyReunion), then click Continue.
  5. Choose photo enhancement options (defaults are recommended), click Continue, then Close.
  6. Click Settings > Scan Settings:
    • Select resolution (300 dpi for speed, 1200 dpi for quality).
    • Select file format (JPEG or TIFF for archival quality).
    • Click OK.
  7. Click "Scanning" to describe photos:
    • Enter year/decade, month/season, and subject (this will overwrite the file name prefix).
    • File naming:
      • _a = enhanced version
      • _b = back of photo (if detected)
    • Click “Start Scanning.”
  8. When finished:
    • Click “Done Scanning” to view thumbnails.
    • Compare photo count with what you loaded.
    • To scan more: Load and click “Scan Next Batch.”
  9. Editing (Optional):
    • Click the Edit icon to crop, rotate, enhance, restore, etc.
    • Additional tools available in the Digital Lab.
    • Click the X in the corner to exit when done.

Clearing a Jam

  • If a jam occurs, open the automatic document feeder by pulling forward the release switch.
  • Gently remove your photos.
  • Close the feeder door, reload, and try scanning again.
  • Ask staff if you’re unsure how to proceed.
