History of the Buckeye Branch Library
In the fall of 1948, the Franklin Sylvester Library’s first bookmobile began service to the rural districts on Medina County. Its two-week schedule was comprised of twenty-six stops, which included visits to Valley City and the Liverpool School. Bookmobile service continued in Medina County with the purchase of a second bookmobile in 1958. In 1982, a variety of circumstances forced discontinuation of Medina County District Library’s (MCDL) mobile services. In 1987 re-established bookmobile service by purchasing a new vehicle. Due in part to the popularity and success of Bookmobile service in Liverpool, Litchfield, and York townships, the Buckeye school area was earmarked for a new public library. This became possible with the passage of the MCDL bond issue in 2003. Earlier that year, the Steingass-Riggs family had donated 5.38 acres at the corner of Wolff Road and Columbia Road for the construction of the new library. Buckeye Library would become the first new branch of MCDL in more than 20 years. The Buckeye Library building is about 27,000 square feet, with about 9,000 square feet of that devoted to the public library. The remaining square footage provides office, storage, and collection space for the system’s Maintenance and Delivery departments and Outreach Services. In addition, the building supplies garage space for the Bookmobile and other MCDL delivery vehicles. The name, "Outreach Services," describes exactly what this special department does. It’s the library department whose staff members reach out into the community to serve those who may not be able to visit a library. The Bookmobile, Home Delivery of Library Materials, and the Early Childhood Librarian are all included in this department. The Maintenance and Delivery Department provides upkeep on all MCDL buildings and sorts and delivers several tons of library books and mail each year. They make sure that books you request from within the Clevnet system or from across the country make it to the intended recipient…you, our patron. |
