The renewal of an item essentially "recharges" that item to the same patron thus allowing him/her to borrow it for an additional borrowing period.

All MCDL owned items may be renewed up to 5 times. Exceptions to this rule include:

• Core Collection cannot be renewed.
• Tot Boxes cannot be renewed.
• Items with outstanding holds cannot be renewed.
• OCLC interloaned items cannot be renewed.
• Bi Folkal Kits cannot be renewed.
• Items not owned by MCDL may be renewed according to the limits set by the owning agency.

In order to renew an item, the patron may either: 

• renew the item online
• renew the item by phone by calling any MCDL branch
• bring the item or the printed receipt for the item to any MCDL circulation desk
