Library Cards

A library card refers to the physical card used to obtain library borrowing and computer use privileges. In addition, it is often used to reference a patron's database record.

Anyone of any age or place of residence can obtain a Medina County District Library card by visiting any of our six branches or the bookmobile and filling out an application.

Definitions of library card statuses or conditions:

  • Deleted Cards
If a library card has not been verified 3 years after it has expired, the card will be deleted from the system. A card number may be manually deleted from the system at the request of a patron or the parent/guardian of a minor.
  • Delinquent Cards
All borrowing and computer privileges will be suspended in the event that a patron's card becomes delinquent.
    • The following limits define a delinquent account:
      • Number of Items Checked Out - a patron may not have more than 60 items charged out on his/her record at one time.
      • Overdues - A patron may not exceed 25 overdues on his/her record.
      • Dollar Limit - A patron may not exceed $25.00 in fines charged to his/her record. Patrons with the class of S (staff) or V (board members) may not exceed $50.00 in fines. This amount can be any combination of unpaid fines, fees, and billed charges of assumed lost items.
    • Overdue or lost items from other libraries may cause a library card to become delinquent based on the owning library's policies.
    • Once a patron either pays the fine or returns items bringing the total below the limits, items may be charged to his/her card.
  • Expired Cards
A library card will automatically expire every three years and must be verified again. Educator cards will expire every year and must be verified again. A patron's expired card must be verified by confirming his/her address and telephone number and educator status, if applicable.
  • Inactive Cards
A library card becomes inactive if there is no activity for one year. A card is automatically reactivated once it is used again.
  • Lost Cards
A patron should report a lost or stolen card immediately. To receive a replacement card, a patron must present a valid I.D. or verifying information (D.O.B.). There is a $.50 charge. If a card is reported lost or stolen either over the phone or by someone other than the card holder, staff will clear the card number from the record. In accordance with the MCDL Confidentiality Policy, no information about this card may be given over the phone or to a third party.
  • Worn or Damaged Cards
A worn or damaged library card is replaced free of charge.
